NewBees at Work: The warm welcome by a familiar face from the AZC

One morning a lady from Uganda walks into our office for an intake. It immediately feels like seeing a good friend again. One of the matchers turned out to have been with her in the same AZC in Almere. โ€˜Hey, how nice to see you here! Good that you are working here. You have a job! Iโ€™m so proud of you.โ€™ Itโ€™s moving to see how happy she was for our matcher. It felt like he was a role model to her. She was even happier when she found out that he would be her matcher. Subsequently, the response was with a lot of reassurance and encouragement: โ€˜We will also arrange something nice for you, because sometimes you just need one chance; a door through which you can enter. And for me that was here. I will really do my best for you. I feel that everything will work out.โ€™

Diversity in the workplace means more than just hiring newcomers and putting them on your team

Het warme weerzien tussen twee bekenden uit het AZC featured

After we sit down at the table, we start with the intake. It turns out that she can speak Dutch quite well, but she thought it could be even better. We talk about her education, talents and ambitions. She has a passion for numbers and had worked in a bank in Uganda, her country of origin. After she arrived in the Netherlands, she was given a chance at a bank in a development position in the context of diversity. However, that seemed better than it ultimately was. Diversity in the workplace means more than just hiring newcomers and putting them in your team. Without the right guidance it turned out to be unsuccessful for both parties. And thatโ€™s how she ended up at NewBees.

โ€˜You have a job! Iโ€™m so proud of youโ€™

The importance of intrinsic motivation

The journey for a suitable workplace starts with the intrinsic motivation of the newbee. Not only education and work experience play a role in this, but also ambitions and dreams. Because what this newbee wanted most was being self-sufficient. Why? Because she had always been able to take care of herself and now felt that others had to take care of her. She wanted to change that as soon as possible. That is why we started looking for a workplace with a job prospect. And we did find a place, though shortly after she turned out to be pregnant. Therefore the match is off for now.
